All Panthers Gather; Awards!
by Jeremy Derois
The annual Athletics’ Award Banquet was held last Thursday, May 6, 2010. Over 225 people attended this year to honor the athletes, coaches, and managers. The night kicked off with a spaghetti dinner, to help fundraise for the athletic department. Mrs. Hernandez, mom of a former athlete, helped cook along with the help of Mrs. Brand, mother of basketball and softball player Sam Brand.
As people settled in Mrs. Bonnie Winters, TCP’s Athletic Director, kicked off the night by calling up Mr. Wamsley, the volleyball coach. Coach Wamsley honored the team and gave the highly anticipated MVP award to Jeannie Wood.
Coach Nickle brought forward his fall soccer team forward. They had a tremendous season, and Co-Captain Jacob Nickle took home Most Valuable Player for that.
Girls’ basketball came up next, under the helm of Coach Wamsley. Once again a Co-Captain, Summer Rhynolds, took home MVP. In boys’ basketball Levi Parmelee got the much desired award.
Rowing team came to the front after the boys’ team and Coaches Mr.Pasterino and Mrs. Halvorson honored them all with various awards. Rowing oarsman of the year went to Logan McMillan or the “Beast” as the other rowers call him.
Spring Soccer’s MVP went to Gavin Turner, and Alex VanKirk was Most Valuable Player for this year’s golf team.
Overall the Award’s Banquet went well, with the Athletic Department earning over $1950 between the dinner and the baskets the teams sold. Rowing’s gift card basket went for the most, at a whopping $300.
Mrs. Winters ended the night by honoring some special students. Two students participated all four years of high school in year round sports, Deanna D’Allasandro for four years of rowing, and Summer Rhynolds for four years of fall soccer, girls’ basketball, and softball.
After that five Scholar Athletes were named. Scholar athletes must maintain a 3.5 GPA and play at least three years in the same sport. Those spectacular athletes were Deanna D’Allasandro, Levi Parmalee, Katie Ryan, Rachel Underwood, and Vicky Winters.
Congratulations to these five and to all athletes for making TCP look fantastic!
