All the Numbers Add up in Middle School Math Competition

By Danielle Oquist
On April 29, Mu Alpha Theta and Math Honors hosted the annual middle school math competition. There were over 180 middle school students here; doubling TCP’s student population. With the help of Mu Alpha Theta and Math Honors, the competition went well and many schools are already promising to come back next year.
The top three schools, Prescott Mile High Middle School, Bradshaw Mountain Middle School, and Heritage Middle School were very pleased with the way it was ran and the experience it provided for their students.
“Your kids did an awesome job! They made sure that the students had everything they needed and we all had a great time. The competition went smoothly and we all will gladly come back next year,” said Bradshaw Mountain’s Adviser.
“The individual tests and the College Bowl really stretched our students and forced them to use what they had learned. We really liked that,” said Parkview Middle School.
The math competition was organized similarly to the Embry Riddle Math competition that our high school attends each year. The students separate into teams of around four and are given seven team questions, all of which were made by students in Mrs. Winter’s Math Honors class. Following that, there is an individual test taken and then the students then go to lunch. This year we sold pizza and Student Council opened the Student Store. When they come back from the meal, there’s a College Bowl. In this, the top teams from each school compete in a single elimination tournament. The winners of the College Bowl were Prescott Mile High Middle School in first, Bradshaw Mountain Middle School in second, and Liberty Traditional School in third.
The kids were really excited to participate in everything. A couple of the students from Heritage Middle School said that they had a great time and hope to come back next year. They wanted to thank everyone that put it together and helped them throughout the day.
Hopefully the Math Honor Society will be able to continue to put this together and make it an annual event for the middle schoolers.
