New Schedule System is a Success

By Liz Earl
Wade Kay’s schedule is unique. When he received the order of classes for the fall semester of 2010, he began planning out his classes- exactly the same as every other semester at Tri-City.
However, this time, it was a little different. Where in past years every student has been called in to the office to discuss their schedule, this year it was a little more mechanical.
“We’ve had a late start… but so far, it’s much better,” says Mrs. Norris, the school counselor. “[We are] in the early stages still. Every schedule is unique.”
Every student in the Freshmen, Sophomore, and Junior classes received a schedule of classes and were told to select their top three choices for each period and one block class for the fall semester. Then, they turned their desired schedule in to the office, where it was given to Norris to review.
“We always determine the class times by the students’ needs and the staff available [in that period],” Norris said when asked about how the schedule order is determined. “We’ve added several upper-level math classes and college English this year as well,” Norris added about how the schedule differs from other years
Systems at TCP are always changing. Teachers often alter their point system based on what works for their students that year, what is most efficient, and what is the most fair for grading. Every teacher’s grading system is a little unique, and students can choose classes based on which teacher’s system they like the best.
Clubs run on their own systems as well. Most are very structured, like the honor societies on campus; but some are looser, like Leo’s Club. The systems are developed year to year by the students in them.
“If we need to tweak the schedules, we will,” says Norris with a smile. “But so far, it’s going very well.”
