Panthers Play Porageously at NAAA Soccer Tournament
by Joe Levie and Danielle Oquist
On May 5, (Cinco de Mayo) our Soccer team played in the Northern Arizona Soccer Tournament. Their first game was at 11:00 and they managed to pull off a win of 1-0 against American Heritage Academy. The team performed well and the teachers, parents, and players were all ecstatic.
“The team was amazing! The second half they were on fire and deserved that win.” Says Coach Turner and Mrs. Winters readily agreed.
“I was proud to be the athletic director of Tri-City at that point. Our others teams perform well, but they never get recognized for it as far as a trophy or a plaque. This was a great tournament start off.” Mrs. Winters commented as we sat down to eat Gurley Street Grill. Mrs. Winters also put together the food arrangements and made sure that the field was outlined so that we could even play. The referees recognized this and also offered their congratulations.
“You guys played great and certainly put yourself out there as the team to beat.” commented one of the referees.
The team was pumped and glad to have the chance to take on Oak Creek Ranch School, who was hands down the school rivals of the spring season.
The following championship game was ecstatic and fired up. Shortly after the team participated in the awards ceremony for the girls, they were whistled to the field for a five minute warm up. Now this rival, Oak Creek, has been the only team TCP hasn’t blown out of the water. The first match ended in a tie and the game at home was a very close unfortunate loss. This game was the battle to end all feuds with a rival, the Panthers felt at heart they could sweep. However, fate had something else planned that day.
Despite being tired from their first more recent match at 11:00 a.m, Panthers held their own at the commencement of the championship at 1:00 p.m. The crucial loss of their substitute sweeper, Jeffrey Kay, from the first match against American Heritage proved fatal. After twenty minutes of endless sprinting and skilled combination from Oak Creek’s four forwards, the defensive wall slipped and let a goal intensify the match.
Coach Turner’s response was to send prior defensive back, Joe Levie, to hold up the line. Not one more goal was scored, with combined defensive efforts of Keeper, Colten Lindauer, who had some amazing saves and the four defenders: Joey Sorce, Savannah Flick, Danielle Oquist, and Levie. However, the offensive line was weakened and was not able to get together on the foreign large terrain to score before the end of the match. After all these noble efforts, the soccer Panthers held their heads high walking off the field to take runner up in the awards ceremony. Playing one player short and against all odds, Panthers felt they did their best.
Dylan Blanco, starting sweeper, hearing the news from his beloved team said, “I know you guys did your best, I’m glad you guys took 2nd and am proud of my team,” he was not able to participate because he was assisting with his sister’s, Brianna Blanco, wedding in Las Vegas that week. |
