Sifting through the Mire

           By Rachel Underwood
When I began my college and scholarship searches during the summer between my Junior and Senior year, I was essentially blind in the dark. I knew practically nothing of how to find the scholarships which applied to me, and the plethora of websites flooding the internet with scholarships became a confusing maze in which I swiftly became lost. However, with the help of our amazing advisor, Mrs. Norris, and a variety of my college friends, I was eventually able to sift my way through the mire.
My main encouragement for Seniors who are applying for scholarships throughout the coming year is this: Start now! The worst situation you can place yourself in is trying to squeeze a 1500 word essay for a scholarship into one day, only to find that because you rushed it you don’t receive the scholarship and you wasted a perfectly good day with stress. In addition, I would like to encourage everyone to primarily focus on local scholarships; national scholarships can be very difficult to get because of the thousands of students vying for them, creating a fierce competition that is nigh impossible to conquer in many cases.
I give one last word to you all. Don’t become disappointed if you don’t receive certain scholarships; hundreds upon hundreds of incredible students apply to each one, usually with only one scholarship awarded. If you receive perhaps 2 out of 10 you apply for, that’s fantastic! Push through to the end with your applications, and they will eventually “pay off.” J
