Tri City Cools Down at Skate Night
By Tedd Mostert

On Friday, December 11th, 2009, Tri City Prep bundled up and chilled out at the Tim’s Toyota Center to introduce some fun into their otherwise busy schedules.  It was a great success, for there were around 80-100 skaters on the ice at any given time during the session.  Starting at 7 pm, skaters shredded the ice; some showing their bravado through great tricks, others taking it nice and easy while they spent some quality time with friends.  No matter how the time on the ice was spent, everyone had a great time.  Seeing all those of smiling faces after three hours of pure enjoyment indicated just how great this idea was.
“It’s nice to hang out with people from school outside of school”, says one of the participants, “there is no work to it; just racing around the rink with friends and slingshotting around corners, losing control, but not falling”.
Mrs. Milliken appeared at skate night and witnessed the rewards of the Student Council’s hard work.
“I enjoyed skate night,” said Mrs. Milliken, “It was nice having the place to ourselves.”
Mrs. Milliken stayed primarily by the door and chatted with other teachers.  However, when she did skate, she felt that she didn’t have to be embarrassed since she recognized most of the participants and knew them.  Several other students most likely felt the same way, and laughed along with other students as they fell together on the ice.  Tri City, being a small school of a little over 200, is where students can recognize one another without having to ask for names.
Students could even sign a guest pass and bring a friend from outside Tri City to double the merriment.
“It’s great to have guests, but not so many that they outnumber students from Tri City”, said Mrs. Milliken.  If more guests appeared than students, then there would be no point in calling this night ‘Tri City Prep Skate night’.
Numerous aspects of this night were positive, but there are still some changes that would improve the next Skate Night.  Tri City’s proprietary to Pepsi gave Tim’s Toyota the opportunity to provide free drinks for tired skaters in the past.  However, Tim’s Toyota wanted students to provide for their own drinks by buying them from the vending machines.  Action is being taken by Student Council to re-introduce this benefit to Skate Night.
Along with bringing drinks back to Skate Night, Mrs. Milliken would like to see greater varieties of music offered.  Attendance will most likely remain consistent and increase when guests and students alike know that the only genres of music to skate to are rap and techno.
The admission fee and skate rental appeared to be free for students, but this is only because the Student Council was generous enough to deal with the costs.  Student Council is now considering splitting the costs with the student body, since Student Council already finishes their part by arranging the time and place to skate.  This is a reasonable compromise, considering that the normal price for both skate rental and admission fee is $7.00 for 2 hours, and the rink is not reserved for Tri City Prep students only.
Whether this night was a learning experience, a chance to fine tune skills, or a chance to strengthen bonds with friends, everyone had fun.  It is safe to say that the majority of those who attended are crossing their fingers for another similar opportunity to come, and they’re in luck.  Tim’s Toyota was clearly pleased with student behavior and cooperation, and has re-invited the school to return once more.  With enough luck, Tri City will be back on the ice before the season comes to a close, and continue to return to the ice rink for all of its skating needs.
