TCP Archery Shoots, and They Score!
By Tedd Mostert
Congratulations to Tri City Prep’s archery team for their standings in the 2010 Arizona NASP State tournament on Saturday, April 17th! The archery team though not scored as a team but rather individually, scored very well. The two top-scoring archers were Steven Paglia and Evelyn Ballard, placing 12th of 50 in the boys’ division and 3rd of 24 in the girls’ division respectively. The rest of the team also scored well, with Patrick O’Connor coming in 23rd of 50 in the boy’s division, and Deanna Bigham placing 9th of 24 in the girls’ division.
Prior to the State Tournament, Mr. Batzli believed that the Tri-City Prep archery team would score respectably. However, he certainly did not expect this. It is unfortunate that he was unable to watch the team in the tournament, but he said that he would be cheering from afar for their endeavors.
Participation in archery has increased as a result of an additional archery class 7th period, along with more time to shoot and slots. The increase in opportunity and encouragement to shoot with a larger team has shown an increase in scores and devotion. Prescott Valley High School has also invited the archery students to friendly competitions to simulate an official archery tournament.
The average archer at TCP scores from 260 to 270. With these scores in mind the archery team has great potential in some to qualify for future national tournaments. Tri-City archery aspired to do well in the State Tournament, and aimed high to make it into the National Tournament.
The rules pertaining to a tournament are simple. First and foremost, a participant cannot begin shooting without regarding the different whistle commands. Each archer will shoot three ends of five arrows from ten meters and three more ends from fifteen meters away from a target. Members of group A and group B (each consisting of half of the total contestants) will take turns stepping up to the shooting line to score. The perfect score in a tournament is three hundred points.
Evelyn, being a new member of the archery team, was shocked at first to qualify for the National Tournament. She is traveling to Kentucky in order to try her hand in the Nationals. Hopefully she will have enough rest before the tournament begins, especially after leaving at midnight the night before.
