NHS Students Tours University of Arizona

By Liz Earl

On January 28th, ten students from TCP’s chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) traveled four hours to Tucson to tour the University of Arizona campus in hopes of finding a college that they might attend in a year or two.
“It was fun,” said Jeremy DeRois, a junior. “I was seriously interested before, but even more so now. My view improved of dorm living and university life.”
Traveling down on Thursday afternoon, the group arrived at roughly 7:30 PM in Tucson, and began their tour at 10 AM on Friday. After meeting up with Natalie Harshman and KC Libman, two alumni, the group went out to lunch at restaurants on campus and set off again for Prescott.
The group has gone before, but Mrs. Norris, the advisor of NHS, saw this year more positively. “I enjoyed this trip more than last year. I felt like I got more information,” she said. “Meeting with the alumni and getting an inside view gave me another dimension as far as what students need to know.”
U of A has been labeled as the 77th best university in the world. The dance program is second only in competition to the Julliard School of arts in New York. It also has the only medical program left in Arizona. Due to budget restraints, the other two universities have had to cut their programs.
“I have been recommending [U of A] more as of the last two or three years,” Mrs. Norris says. “It’s more highly ranked than the other two universities [in Arizona]. It also has more majors and alternatives to offer to students.”
NHS takes yearly trips to Arizona universities; it gives students in the honor society more experience with in-state colleges. With tuition going up and the economy going down, in-state colleges have become the most viable option to students.
When next year rolls around, the NHS will take a trip again, and more students will make important decisions that they might not have if they hadn’t visited the campus.
