What Does It Really Matter?
By Jessica Holevar
Every year, juniors start their journey to college acceptance. Colleges look at many parts of a student’s academics and life. One of these is test scores, mainly the SAT.
Those three letters can instantly bring fear and stress. According to Mrs. Norris, there are some simple steps to take to help prepare to take this test, and also to lessen the stress of the experience.
The first thing is that students should take the PSAT the fall of their junior year. After this, take as many practice SAT tests as possible. Some programs will offer up to 11 but try for at least 3-4. Reading challenging literature, and expanding vocabulary, will help immensely.
But still, why does it matter?
Your future college career can be greatly affected by your score. Colleges look at the SAT’s not only for admission, but also for scholarships. Generally, the higher the score, the larger the scholarship.
The SAT is a three part test; critical reading, writing, and math. The best possible score for each section is an 800. This is incredibly difficult to achieve, Ivy League schools look for scores in the 700’s.
The difference between the SAT and other tests, is that it is more difficult, and long. It is also timed, and takes 5 hours to take.
The test should be taken in spring of a student’s Junior year, and can be taken multiple times.
Don’t let this be intimidating. Just study hard, sleep, and be prepared! |
